Variety, I understand, is the spice of life, and the world of lutherie can be a spicy one at times. The ukulele is undergoing a worldwide revival, and I've done some custom work in that genre.

These two custom ukes were built for the same customer, both with premium koa backs and sides. The uke on the left is also topped with koa, but the other has a superb top of red (Adirondack) spruce that was sawn in the year 1900. I only have few boards of this wood, and they're perforated with nail and worm holes, but I managed to resaw a piece big enough to make a ukulele top. The result was well worth the effort. Wow! What a piece of wood. Wish I had a truckload. |
| Mountain dulcimer, anyone? This unique instrument was designed by a customer who was dissatisfied with the dampening effect on the sound when the dulcimer is placed across the legs. Others have added an additional back so that the inner soundboard is free to resonate, but this one has an inner soundboard of spruce that is both braced for optimum resonance and vented through tuned ports. In addition, the fretboard is clear of the top so that it is free to resonate. The sound is sweet, and it's loud! This instrument was the feature of a full-length article in American Lutherie magazine, the premier publication for instrument builders worldwide. |

Oops . . . I almost called this a dobro, and you just can't do that anymore. Nope, it's a resophonic guitar, or as my wife calls it, my "whiner." It does whine with the best of them, loudly and with gusto.
If it has strings, I can build it, and probably have. Contact us with your ideas for that unique or seldom-seen instrument today. |
