The banjo, with its large expanses of ebony on the neck and headstock, lends itself well to custom inlay work. Here are a few examples that utilize a multitude of inlay materials: mother of pearl, abalone, reconstituted stone, and vinyl. "Themes," such as the "Alice in Wonderland" and "Civil War" examples shown above, add visual interest to these instruments.

Jet banjo back inlay
The inlay on this special banjo is a representation of the jet the customer flew during the Korean Conflict. Additional inlay materials include aluminum and ebony. The difficulty of the inlay work was compounded by the convex surface.
